Permanent Mission of Sri Lanka to the United Nations in New York hosted a diplomatic reception on 05 February 2025 in the Mission premises, marking the 78th Anniversary of Independence of Sri Lanka.
The event was attended by Permanent Representatives and diplomats of UN member States including higher officials of the United Nations. The reception commenced with the singing of the national anthem, followed by the Ambassador & Permanent Representative of Sri Lanka Jayantha Jayasuriya, addressing the gathering. In his statement, Ambassador Jayasuriya mentioned about Sri Lanka’s continuous engagement with the United Nations and its member States and Sri Lanka’s commitment in strengthening international cooperation. He also thanked the United Nations and the member States for their support extended to Sri Lanka during the aftermath of Cyclone Ditwah.
He emphasized the significance of the special programme initiatives by the Government of Sri Lanka such as the ‘Rebuild Sri Lanka’ including the ‘Clean Sri Lanka’ programme.
The event also included traditional Sri Lankan dance and musical performances and a buffet of Sri Lankan delicacies.
